Dad

What is one of your fondest or funniest memories with this guy? Or if you can't think of a specific experience, just jot down something you love about him. Happy Father's Day Dad!!

  1. I have too many fond memories of Dad to count. One of the first memories I have of dad is him smelling like a dentist! Haha. But, I seriously still love the smell of a dentist office which I'm sure most people find gross! I also remember dad coaching my basketball team. I felt pretty cool having my dad as my basketball coach. He was a great coach too. Working in Dad's office wasn't my favorite memory in the world, but watching Dad work is a great memory. He is so great with people. I learned a lot about dealing with people from watching my father at work. I loved family vacations with Dad! No one knows how to have fun like Dad! Every single one of our family vacations is a good memory for me. Going to Mexico, Disneyland, Canada, Grand Canyon, etc. Dad was always ready for adventure wherever we went. I remember digging through an archeological site with Dad down in Richfield. I was surprised when he said he'd always dreamed of being an archeologist, but I still think that's pretty darn cool. When I came home from college, Dad used to take me golfing early in the mornings, and I loved that. I think all of us kids remember our early morning wake up call! "Do not let them pass by, saying, (in the whiniest voice ever: 'sometime I'll try.'") When Dad used to wake us up for scripture study, it was pure torture hearing that song everyday, but as an adult, I appreciate how torturous that must have been for Dad, dragging everyone out of bed each morning. I think he took some of his frustration out in that song. Haha. But seriously, I admire Dad so much for having the dedication to do that each and every day. I know it helped me not to fall away from the church. Dad has always been a great example to me. His father's blessings over the years have blessed my life more than I can say. There's nothing like them to bring me peace, comfort and strength. I'm so proud to be the daughter of Jay Martin Harris. Dad, when you read this, I hope you know how much I love you and am proud to be your daughter. I'm so grateful to have you in my life!!

  2. Even though Grandpa is not my real grandpa he sure acts like one. I never knew my Grandpa Parker and my Grandpa Worthington passed away about a year earlier. And when I met him he was really nice and he pretty much already started acting like a grandpa before dad and holly got married. Some memories I have of him is that he is always willing to help out with anything, he is always trying to help our family out with whatever situation we are in. I also love how musically talented he is. Grandpa is always so funny and sweet. And I consider him a real grandpa. -Maddy

This is Anson's favorite Grandpa story. We went to the zoo in Omaha and rode on a ski lift over the zoo. Grandma, Grandpa, and Anson rode in the same lift. As they passed over the giraffe area, Grandpa said, "Come over here giraffe so I can kick you in the head!" This was in 2009 and Anson just told me yesterday that this is still his favorite Grandpa moment.

  4. One of my favorite memories was when I was young and we were sitting in the kitchen of our old house and we were all drawing pictures together. I remember clearly the profile drawing of a man's face. He was bald with a very large nose. I remember dad saying that he had drawn a picture like that one when he was in college. I also remember trying over and over again to draw a picture that looked just like it. To this day I still see all the cool things that dad does and try to replicate them.

  5. Dad is the best. I could name a thousand memories of Dad helping me, or encouraging me, or just having fun with me. But here’s one of my VERY favorite memories…

When I was 11 years old, Mom was called as the Young Women’s President. At first I was sad that I could not go and participate with Mom and Julie in all of the fun YW activities. But I quickly changed my mind about that.

Dad stepped up to the plate and for about a year straight I was Dad’s date every Tuesday night. We’d grab a bite to eat and then go see a movie. At the end of each date, we would rate the movie on a scale of 1–10. A few movies I remember seeing on our dates were Evida and Jurassic Park 3.

I was actually kind of sad when I turned 12 and our date nights ended. I loved the time I had with just me and my dad. I’ll never forget it.

I love you so much Dad. Thank you for being the best papa I could possibly imagine. Happy Father’s Day!

  6. (For Carly)

Whenever I ask Carly who loves her, she first answers Mommy. Then she says Daddy. And then she says Grandpa Harris. In that same order, everytime. This last time they came to visit, Carly told me that Grandpa Harris is her best friend. She knows her Grandpa loves her and I think that's pretty darn sweet. She sure loves him too.

  7. Dad,
I love You! You are such a great example to me of how to live a fulfilling life. I admire so much about you. Your service to the church as a Stake President was amazing and you taught me so much about really fulfilling a calling. Some of my favorite memories are of when Drew and I first moved to Idaho Falls and we would get together every Thursday night and play canasta. You always take the pile :) I remember many dinners you have taken us out to, and all of the great conversations and food. I love spending time with you and Mom. You are so generous with your time and money. I have always admired your musical talents and have great memories of attending Mountain River Ranch and watching your band play. Dad, you always have a kind thing to say. I have heard you say to me many times that you consider me as one of your daughters, well I just want you to know that I consider you my Father and that I'm so glad that I am a part of your family.
    Love,
    Marie

  8. Thank you Dad for everything that you do. You have always been there for me - no matter what! You've even let me throw up in your lap as a little girl. I know you'll be there for me no matter what I do. You stood by Thomas and I when we got married, and you still help and support us daily.

You have been a great example to me of the kind of person that I want to be. You live your life in righteous joy. You are caring and kind, funny and sincere, industrious and playful. I am so lucky to be one of the few people who gets to call you my father.

Thank you for teaching me how to be a good parent. You have taught me the gospel. You have taught me to love music, you are so incredibly talented. You taught me about art and beauty. You taught me about giving and charity. You taught me to study and work hard towards important goals.

You are my hero and I admire you so much. Happy Father's Day to my favorite dad!

    Love, Julie

  9. I always liked shopping with Dad. We would say,"Dad, can we get this candy?" and he'd say, "Sure, why not, and grab some of those too." Whenever mom would say, "We need to get some groceries." we'd all say, "Send Dad!"
Mom and Dad would often take us one at a time on dates. One night, I don't remember why, but Dad alone took me out to see a movie. It was the first Mission Impossible movie. The movie was pretty dumb. People kept ripping masks off (layer after layer). I don't think either of us cared much for the film, but it was so much fun spending time alone with Dad. It went down as a memorable night for me, not because of what I saw, but because of the conversations we shared.
There is so much to love and admire about Dad. He has accomplished so much. You are a hero to me.

  10. Thanks to Anson I now have a new favorite story of Grandpa Harris. Hilarious! I love Grandpa’s jokes.

I have never met anyone who could build up others like Dad does. The joy and praise he shares with us is remarkable. He is the ultimate example of how to love, praise and build up those I care about.

He has also done a great job at welcoming us in-laws into the family. When Emily and I were first married he told me that he would like it if I called him Dad and Trudy, Mom. It was not just a passing comment but a sincere request. At first it was a little awkward, but now it feels natural and I’m so glad he made the effort early on.

    Love you Dad,
    Christian
